So you want to learn how to start an online business for free? Great! It can take some time and effort to start an online business from scratch, however, it can also be a very lucrative business. The only thing I would want to say to you before you get started is to take out that mentality in your head where you have to exchange your time for money.
It took me months upon hours upon months to get some major work done. I contemplated the domain name to different hosting companies and the subject matter etc.
There are 2 ways you can get started. 1st is doing it yourself [free] second is hiring someone that will create a website for you so you can sell products or services.
Either way, you will get some ROI return on investment as long as you are consistent.
When I first started I didn’t have a proper plan in place, my brain was operating all over the place. I had so many ideas and let me tell you Google and YouTube were my best friends.
Now I understand the process, as well as what it takes to get there and I want to show you how you can get there too.

Write Down Your Goals
What helped me along the way was trial and error and the more I practiced my writing skills or researched on what I wanted to do the better I became.
With that being said the best course of action is to write down a list of your ideas and what direction you want your website to go.
Do you want a website that you can monetize? or are you creating a website for personal use? Do you want to sell products or services?
Again the hardest part for me was the idea and then I decided to come up with this site on how to make websites and to monetize them.
Whichever direction you take will always be a step in the right direction. Why? Because the Internet is dominating right now so it would do you justice to be a part of the online space.
Have Long-Term Goals
I like to research different ways on how to achieve my goals and to follow other leaders direction. Remember we all learn from one another. When you go to school you have a professor teaching you how to properly write an essay.
That’s because they have already followed someone else’s direction in achieving that subject matter. I recently viewed a video on Ted
Talk where Ari Wallach explains more in-depth on long-term goals.
It’s very inspiring but also very rewarding because you take from that a great deal of understanding on how to make it work.
Pick A Niche, A Product Or Service
When clients come up to me with an idea of what they are wanting to do. However, sometimes there are just too many ideas.
The important concept here is to stick to one product or service that you are good at or that you are passionate about learning. You can’t force to want to get into something you have to, in theory, be willing to discuss it constantly and be the expert.
Consistency definitely plays a big factor in the process as well.
Create An Educational Platform
Ok, so what I mean by this is educate others on what you are trying to accomplish for instance.
You are a baker and you want to sell your baking goods because you are really good at it and passionate about it.
But you also want to share your buttercream secrets. People are visual and hands-on, we all want to be a part of something that we are all passionate about. So why not educate others and show them your secrets to success.
Create A Great Domain Name
Ok, you now that you have your action plan down packed it’s time to start thinking of some good domain names. Picking a good domain name is important as it relates to your niche. You also want to take into consideration having a good extension like .com. Those are pretty popular.
However, based on my experience I believe that a .com extension would be more memorable to the client that goes to your site.
Choose your hosting provider
Alright, you have your domain name with your extension along with your ideas that you want to pursue. Now it’s time to search for a hosting provider.
All providers offer different services such as bandwidth space, formatting, customization however here are the ones I have had good experience with.
Bluehost: Ranges from $3.95 a month to $350 in a year. I have used Bluehost for some of my clients since it is integrated with WordPress as well.
Wealthy Affiliate: $350 a year
This is what I use for all of my websites. What I like about this platform is not only will you have your hosting provider but you will also be educated on other subjects such as:
- Using WordPress
- Build traffic
- Make money
- Live training and more!
Choose Your Platform
Hosting and your platform goes hand in hand, Many platforms such as WIX, Squarespace or even WordPress already have hosting provided for you. I personally work with WordPress because I am able to customize your site better.
Also, WordPress dominates about 33% of the internet space which in theory would allow for more exposure.
How to start an online business for free doesn’t have to be a painful process as time passes you will progress.
Write Good Content
“YOAST SEO” I wish I have known of this plugin when I first started writing content. Writing good quality content takes time and effort.
You want to be able to provide a solution for your clients as well as continue to educate and be a positive reinforcement.
Yoast SEO provides suggestions on creating good content as well as emphasizing on focus keywords. It will indicate if you have too little headings or if you are not properly using your keywords. it’s totally a must have.
Free Learning Platforms
Always, always, always educate yourselves. Just as technology changes on a constant basis so does platforms. Not only do you want to learn how changes can affect your business but also you want to be able to scale it to the next level.
A lot of the educational platforms that I use are platforms as hubspot.com, udemy.com, allision.com and more.
I know this is a given but the reality is that many of us don’t find the time to dedicate to your personal goals. Also, a lot of us have that mindset that time is traded for money and that is not the case.
Sometimes you are just going to have to find time to dedicate unless you end up paying someone to do the work. Either way, you will have to find time to do that.
When learning on how to start an online business for free you want to be able to different if there was a cost how that would also impact your business. Essentially I would start off free but then I would definitely try to invest some money since it can also reflect on your customization for the site.
Free or not the cost of building a website on your own I would say on average $0-$30 months. that would be for your hosting SEO, SSL how much space you need but most importantly what company you go with.
Now if you’re looking for a professional to it it can range between $500- $2500. If it’s an e-commerce site then they can easily start at $1500 It all depends on many variables the complexity of your site,
Many people aren’t aware of all the factors that it takes to create a site and manage so I want to touch base on that. Yea you can definitely manage a site on your own but take into account these factors
- Automatic updates
- Understanding SEO set up
- What plugins should be utilized
- How much bandwidth and space you have available to use
- If you want to include PayPal or an e-commerce site
- Understanding the importance of keyword
- Coding- depending on how customizable you want it
